Protein Coffee Experiment: My 7-Day Honest Review (Taste, Energy, and What I’d Change)

Alrighty, welcome to February. Crazy how fast that went. January is already done. Honestly, January was a solid month. We worked hard, made some good memories, and we’re still pushing towards something bigger.

Right now it’s been freezing here in Lafayette. Like… painfully cold. It’s around -20°C, which is about -4°F (yeah, that’s illegal weather).

Because it’s been so cold and I’ve been stuck inside anyway, I finally locked in and did something I’ve been procrastinating forever: my driver’s license stuff. I passed the written test, so now the next step is the driving test.

And one question on the test actually made me laugh. It basically said something like: “If you’re tired while driving, coffee will fix the problem.” And the correct answer was false. I was like… wait WHAT? 😂 But honestly, it makes sense. Coffee can make you feel more awake, but if you’re seriously tired, the fix is still sleep. Either way, I’m just happy I passed.

I had a driver’s license in Germany, but here in the U.S. you can only use it for a limited time depending on your situation. And if you’re staying longer, you really need a U.S. license for a bunch of everyday things. It just makes life easier.

Also… I gave in to the American peer pressure and got an iPhone. I’ve always been the guy saying iPhones are overpriced (and I still think they are), but in America like 80% of people have one, and if you don’t, you’re instantly the “green bubble outsider” 😭

But I can’t lie, the camera is really nice. And I want to get more into vlogging and short clips anyway. Plus my old phone battery was so bad it would literally die mid call with my girlfriend, which is the worst timing possible. So yeah… welcome to the Apple lifestyle I guess.

Now let’s talk coffee.

I tested protein coffee for a week

Last week I said I’d try protein coffee and report back if it actually helps with mornings and the whole “coffee on an empty stomach” issue.

So I did it. Every day for a week.

And here’s the honest result.

The method from my last post works. The mix the protein with milk first and don’t dump it into hot coffee trick definitely prevents clumps. So technically, it works.

But the main problem I ran into was simple. My protein flavor is not made for coffee.

Right now I’m using strawberry whey, and mixing strawberry with coffee is… not it. It tasted weird and kind of grainy. Like coffee mixed with a fruity milkshake that got lost on the way to the right drink.

I think chocolate would be way better. Vanilla would probably work too. Hazelnut would be elite. Strawberry is just a bad combo with coffee, at least for me.

Also I might’ve used too much protein. So there’s definitely room to improve the recipe.

How did I feel after a week?

This is the part everyone cares about. Did it actually help?

First thing. I usually don’t eat much in the morning. I wake up and the first thing I do is make a cappuccino. So I wanted to see if protein coffee makes mornings feel smoother.

And I will say this. I felt less nauseous and less empty stomach weird. It felt a little gentler.

Also, protein coffee definitely made me feel full longer. That’s the big thing protein does.

Protein helps with satiety, meaning you stay full longer. It can reduce random cravings and snacking, and for some people it helps stabilize how the morning feels because you’re not running on caffeine only. It basically gives your body something real to work with instead of just stimulation.

But here’s my honest truth. I didn’t feel some insane difference. I didn’t suddenly turn into a productivity machine. I didn’t feel like I unlocked a secret energy cheat code.

The biggest change was just… I didn’t like the taste 😂

And since it’s a little extra work in the morning, I’m probably not going to do it every day. I might try again with chocolate or vanilla protein, because I think that would actually taste good and maybe I’d enjoy it more.

So I’d rate protein coffee like this.

If you’re curious and want smoother mornings, try it.
If your coffee gives you jitters on an empty stomach, it might help.
But don’t expect magic.
And choose a flavor that makes sense with coffee, not strawberry like I did 😭

Next post: Cappuccino vs Flat White

For the next post, I want to go deeper into something I’ve always wanted to write about.

What’s the difference between a cappuccino and a flat white?

Because I swear half the time people order them without really knowing what makes them different, and it’s actually simple once you understand milk texture and ratios.

So that’s next.

Hope you have an amazing start to February, stay warm, and I’ll see you in the next post. ☕️
